Our little Logan broke his arm on Saturday. We were at a stake activity, where they had some really fun bouncy houses there for the kids. They had both waited in line and gone on the one with the big slide, and next they were in the ones that are just for bouncing. Lindsay had gotten out and was heading over to the other one, and Logan was trying to get to the opening to follow, but kept getting bounced off his feet so it took him a little while longer. So, now they were both in different places, and I was trying to keep an eye on both of them (there were so many people there) and Logan had finally made it to the opening and was getting out. I turned my head for a split second to make sure Lindsay had gotten on the other one, and the next thing I knew he was on the ground crying. I saw his arm underneath him and my first thought was that it was broken, but then immediately I thought, No way. I picked him up and he was crying, but really not any worse than if he had gotten cut or something so I didn’t think it was anything too bad. He grabbed his arm so I asked him where it hurt and he pointed to his arm so I looked at it and it did look kind of funny. I picked up his other arm to compare and it was hard to tell if it was really different because he has cute little toddler arms, they’re rolly in all the right places.
But he kept crying so I knew something was wrong and he kept asking for daddy. So, I got Lindsay out of the bouncy house and told her we needed to go see daddy because Logan had gotten hurt. She started to cry because she thought we were going home, but once I told her that we just needed to make sure Logan was okay, we could go back. She perked right up. As soon as Jeffy saw Logan’s arm, he said it was broken. Oh boy.
We knew we had to take him to the doctor just to make sure because at this point, he was kind of cradling it with his other arm. It was cute really. Lindsay really didn’t want to leave and because I had told her we would go back, I felt bad making her leave. And I knew that it would be a horrible night for her if we took her with us. I told my friend what had happened and asked if she wouldn’t mind keeping Lindsay and she of course said she would. Thanks Arianne and Frank!
So, off we went to the InstaCare. I wasn’t about to make him sit in his car seat so I just held him in my lap and buckled us both in. He had stopped crying at this point and actually fell asleep on the way there. Once we got to the InstaCare we had to wait for almost a half an hour to get called back and the whole time he was just pretty limp. When the lady at the front desk asked us what had happened, we told her and afterwards, Jeff told me that he almost said, “That’s the story we’re sticking with, right?” I’m so glad he was an adult at that moment…
We had grabbed a blanket out of the car because I knew that would help calm him down with the doctor and it did actually help. He wasn’t talking. If we asked him a question, he would just nod his head, but he wouldn’t say anything.
Jeff and I still couldn’t believe that he had possibly broken his arm. It was all still happening so fast. Once they called us back, the doctor came in to see us and started looking at his arm, and was pushing on the bones and everything and it didn’t even seem to really bother Logan. He said he knew it was broken because he could hear the bones moving as he pushed. Ew. We tried to get some pictures of his arm but it was hard to get the right angle.
In this picture, you can see a bump on the bottom of his arm where the break is.
See the bump on the right, just above his wrist?
His arm just looks unnaturally bendy to me in this picture. But do you see what I mean about the rolly-cuteness? It’s hard to tell…
After the doctor first looked at it, they took us back to get some x-rays taken. He was being so brave. He sat in daddy’s lap and put his arm on the table, and then the nurse tried to turn his arm on it’s side, so his thumb was pointing towards the ceiling, and he screamed and started crying. I guess it hurt him to turn it like that and he didn’t want to take the x-rays anymore. At this point, the nurse was trying everything to get him to put his arm on the table, but he just wouldn’t do it. All of a sudden, my best mommy skills came out and I asked her if she had any suckers and she said she did. I told Logan that she went to get him a sucker and that we just need to take a picture of his arm. I explained the big machine to him, explained what was going to happen, that there was going to be a light and a red line on his arm and that it would just take a second. She came back with the sucker, gave it to him and he was so cooperative. I felt like I had accomplished something SO big with that. For whatever reason, he understood that we needed to get the x-rays taken and of course, a sucker always helps. Never underestimate your child. They always understand better than you think they do, and a little explanation of things goes a long way. They took the first one with the thumb up and then she needed one of the inside of his arm. I suggested he lay down on the table and then he can just rest his arm, because the nurse was trying to manipulate his arm around to get him to do it. Seriously. He enjoyed looking at the light for that one. After the x-rays were done, we saw the bones and that’s when we found out he broke BOTH of them, just above his wrist.

We showed them to Logan and he thought they were pretty cool. After that, he was a happy kid! The rest of the night we talked and talked and talked and he seemed to be doing just fine.
The nurse gave him a train sticker on the way back to the room and he wanted her to put it on his leg. So she did.
He got a blue sucker and his tongue turned blue and he wanted daddy to take a picture of it. So we did.
The doctor at the InstaCare said that because of the angle of the break, we needed to go to the ER to see an Orthopedic doctor because it might need to be set. So, for the drive down there they put a splint on it to keep it stable. He thought it was neat.
We thanked the nice doctors there and got back in the car to head to Provo. We called Frank and Arianne on the way there and told them we had no idea what time we’d be home. They said no problem and let Lindsay sleep there until we got home.
Logan fell asleep again on the way to the hospital and since the InstaCare had called ahead, the ER people knew we were coming and we were already on the list. So we drove to McDonald’s and got an ice cream cone and just let him sleep. He slept for about an hour, and when he woke up, we could tell he was in some pain. I hadn’t finished my ice cream cone so he finished it for me. Then we went inside and saw the ER doctor. After he looked at the x-rays, he said that he didn’t think it needed to be set and because he’s so young, they’ll naturally grow back the right way. So we didn’t have to get it set. Thank goodness!! Jeffy and I were not looking forward to it, especially Jeffy, because I told him I couldn’t be in the room for that. That would have been too hard for me to watch. So we were relieved that he didn’t have to go through any more pain than he had to. So, we got a new sling and we were on our way home. He fell asleep again on the way home, we picked up a sleeping Lindsay, put them both to bed and couldn’t believe what an evening we had had.
Logan slept with Jeff in our bed and he said that he would whimper every time he tried to roll over, but mostly did okay.
I had planned to give the kids a bath on Saturday night, but obviously that didn’t happen, so I gave them a bath on Sunday morning. Wrapping a splint was hard, but we got the job done and it’ll be easier next time. We did go to church and he wanted to go to Nursery, but I wasn’t sure about it. I didn’t want him to get run into or tripped so I kept him with me for a few minutes, but then just ended up taking him home to take a nap. He sure was cute sitting in church eating his goldfish though.
And coloring with the other hand.
And brushing his teeth with the other hand.
By Monday he didn’t even seem to notice he had a broken arm. He will tell you he only has one arm and one hand, but he seems to get by just fine. Eating can be frustrating for him since he’s right handed, but he’s doing great. The Martinses brought over a cute candy poster for him and he was super EXCITED about it! Then yesterday he got his blue cast on and now I feel better about things. He was a little scared to let the doctors work on him again, but then we asked him if he wanted a sucker and he was good to go. He’s going to think he needs a sucker every time he goes to the doctor.
I was still nervous with the splint on because it’s not as hard as a cast and I was nervous he was going to fall and hurt himself with it on. But a cast makes everything better. Jumping on the bed? Sure! The doctor said that because it is a stable fracture we didn’t necessarily need a cast, that a different kind of splint would work just fine. But again, jumping on the bed is a must at our house, so we opted for the cast for more protection.
I’m so thankful to everyone who helped us that night. Frank and Arianne, you have no idea how much help it was to know that Lindsay was being taken care of. It made it easier for us to concentrate on Logan and what he needed and to be there 100% for him. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much! She still talks about the night she got to sleep at baby Kyson’s house. It was so fun for her! I’m thankful for Jeffy’s job that provides us with health insurance so that we didn’t have to think twice about going to the doctor. I’m so grateful to my Heavenly Father for watching over all of us that night and being with us. That night was emotionally stressful but I think we both handled it really well and I know it’s because our Heavenly Father was there with us. I love my kiddos so much and I’m so blessed to have such great kids. I was about to write that they were both even now, one broken bone for each of them, but really, Logan broke two. That kid always tries to outdo his sister and in this case he did. I love you Lindsay and Logan!
P.S. I went to the store with Logan today and got a few nasty looks from people. Do I have everyone’s permission to kick them in the teeth??

1Yes, people who give you nasty looks need to be kicked somewhere. That’s totally stupid and judgmental.
And I think everyone should get a sucker every time they go to the doctor!

2Seriously!!?? What’s people’s problem? Anyway, he looks absolutely adorable in his little blue cast even though broken bones are not adorable in the least. We’re proud of what a brave boy he is! Good job Logan!
We love you!

3You probably won’t actually kick anyone in the teeth, but you could at least stare disgustedly at their faces like there’s something wrong and leave them feeling self-conscious.
